Indicators and metrics of the Portuguese education system

EDUSTAT is a digital platform that resulted from the felt need to produce quantitative information that would allow analyses and policy formulations in the area of education through greater access to information and greater transparency and rigor in its dissemination, a requirement encouraged by supranational institutions such as the OECD, the European Commission, the World Bank or UNESCO.

With the aim of producing performance indicators for the education system that demonstrate its evolution and allow recommendations and actions for improvement, fostering educational debate around existing information in a comprehensive manner and stimulating scientific research through the sharing of reliable indicators, EDUSTAT provides sufficiently disaggregated data to allow:

  • analyze the importance of the socioeconomic characteristics of families as a determining factor in participation and success in educational paths;
  • support families’ decision-making processes and prevent a reduction in their participation in the education system;
  • monitor the evolution of the degree of articulation between the education system and non-academic entities;
  • assess the impact of education more broadly, whether in economic terms or in terms of increasing the social capital of Portuguese society (political, civic and cultural participation, health and living conditions).

Its design project therefore aimed to define and systematize a set of explanatory indicators/metrics that would allow knowledge of the current situation, trends in evolution and main structural dynamics of the Portuguese education system, providing a critical reading of the education system for different audiences: the general public, those responsible for public policies, researchers and teachers/educators/trainers.
